Spotify and Universal Music Partner to Introduce Licensed AI Covers and Remixes

Spotify has entered into a new partnership with Universal Music Group (UMG) to bring AI-generated song covers and remixes to its platform. The upcoming feature will allow users to create personalised versions of songs using generative AI technology while ensuring artists and songwriters are properly paid for the use of their work.

The feature is expected to launch as a paid add-on for Spotify Premium subscribers, although the company has not yet shared pricing details or a release date. Through licensed AI systems, fans will reportedly be able to generate remixes and covers using tracks from participating artists.

The agreement is considered one of the first major collaborations between a global music streaming service and a leading record label focused on officially bringing generative AI into mainstream music experiences.

Spotify co-CEO Alex Norström said the company’s goal is to develop AI tools that work with artist approval and include fair payment systems. He added that fan-created remixes and covers represent the next stage of music interaction, with the company focusing on consent, proper credit, and compensation for artists and songwriters involved in the programme.

Norström also said Spotify and UMG aim to create a more engaging experience for listeners while helping artists and creators earn additional value from their music.

UMG Chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge described the partnership as a way for artists to deepen connections with fans while opening new revenue opportunities through AI-powered music experiences.

The announcement comes as AI music platforms like Suno and Udio continue facing copyright lawsuits from major music labels over claims that copyrighted songs were used without permission to train AI models.

Spotify said its approach differs because the company plans to use licensed agreements directly with rights holders instead of relying on unauthorised copyrighted material for AI training.

The streaming platform had earlier revealed that it was also in discussions with major labels such as Sony Music Group and Warner Music Group to develop artist-focused AI music tools through official partnerships.

The announcement was made during Spotify’s Investor Day event, where the company also introduced several AI-powered features for podcasts, audiobooks, and creators. The partnership could mark a significant shift in how the music industry adopts generative AI, potentially turning licensed AI-generated music into a new source of revenue for streaming platforms and artists alike.
