IBM and Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) have launched a new artificial intelligence research and computing facility at MAHE’s Bengaluru campus, giving students and researchers access to advanced computing infrastructure for AI development.
Known as the MAHE Intelligence GPU (MIG) lab, the facility features a GPU-powered high-performance computing (HPC) setup designed to handle up to 30 computing workloads at the same time. The lab is built around eight NVIDIA H200 GPU stacks, according to the organisations.
The new centre will support research in areas including machine learning, deep learning, generative AI, computer vision, natural language processing, cybersecurity, healthcare and data analytics.
Iven Jose, Director of MIT Bengaluru, said the initiative is focused on bringing industry and academia closer together while helping students gain practical access to the computing resources needed for next-generation AI technologies.
The launch comes as high-performance computing has become an important requirement for universities, startups and researchers developing and training advanced AI systems. MAHE plans to make the facility available not only to its own students and faculty but also through programmes involving institutions outside the campus.
As part of the partnership, IBM and MIT Bengaluru will also introduce an AI learning programme through IBM SkillsBuild. The initiative will include workshops, bootcamps, practical AI and machine learning sessions, digital credentials and mentorship, with a focus on reaching students from tier-2 and tier-3 institutions.
IBM and MAHE also plan to use the lab as a broader industry-academia platform supporting industry projects, interdisciplinary research, faculty training, student innovation, hackathons, internships, startup incubation and joint technology development.
IBM India and South Asia Managing Director Sandip Patel said stronger collaboration between industry, research institutions, talent and advanced computing infrastructure will be important for India’s growing AI ecosystem.
Karnataka IT and BT Minister Priyank Kharge said the initiative would strengthen the state’s AI ecosystem by giving students and researchers access to advanced infrastructure and hands-on learning opportunities.
