OpenAI has launched workspace agents within ChatGPT, a new feature aimed at helping organisations manage complex, multi-step tasks that can be shared across teams.

The agents run in the cloud, allowing them to continue working even when users are offline.

OpenAI said teams can create shared agents to handle long-running workflows, while still operating within the permissions and controls defined by the organisation.

The company described workspace agents as an extension of its existing GPT-based tools, powered by Codex. They are built for tasks that require coordination across teams, such as pulling information from multiple systems, following set workflows, and requesting approvals at key steps.

These agents can write code, generate reports, and respond to messages. They are also capable of retaining information, working with connected applications, and carrying out tasks on a schedule. OpenAI added that the feature integrates with tools like Slack, allowing it to fit into existing workflows.

Early users have pointed to noticeable time savings. In one example, a sales-focused agent was able to research accounts, summarise call data, and post updates directly into a team channel, without requiring a full engineering setup.

OpenAI also highlighted that agents can be reused across projects, allowing teams to turn their internal knowledge and workflows into repeatable processes.

The feature includes built-in controls, giving organisations the ability to define how agents operate, what tools they can access, and when human approval is needed. For sensitive actions—such as sending emails or editing documents—agents can be set to pause and request permission.

Administrators can manage permissions, monitor usage, and disable agents if required. The company also offers oversight tools, including a Compliance API that provides visibility into each agent’s activity and configuration.

Workspace agents are currently available in research preview for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Teachers plans. The feature will remain free until May 6, 2026, after which OpenAI plans to introduce a credit-based pricing model.
