India’s education and skilling landscape is steadily adapting to the AI era. What was once seen as a specialised skill is now becoming essential across industries, and learning platforms are racing to keep pace.
Against this backdrop, upGrad has partnered with OpenAI to introduce advanced generative AI tools into its learning environment. The announcement was made at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, signalling a strong push toward practical, hands-on AI education.
Under the partnership, upGrad will integrate tools including ChatGPT, Codex and ChatGPT Atlas into its courses. Rather than treating AI as a standalone topic, the company plans to embed these tools directly into coursework, allowing students to use them while completing assignments, coding projects and research tasks.
A notable part of the collaboration is the introduction of ChatGPT Foundations certifications. These programmes are designed to help learners move beyond basic prompts and develop a clearer understanding of how AI tools can be applied in professional settings. The emphasis is on practical fluency — knowing when and how to use AI effectively.
Codex will be integrated into data science and full-stack development tracks, especially within engineering and data labs. This will allow students to work through challenging coding exercises with AI-supported assistance, closely reflecting the way many tech teams now operate in real workplaces.
At the same time, ChatGPT Atlas, supported by its Agent Mode capability, will help learners manage research and streamline workflows. From gathering reliable information to organising analysis, the tool is expected to reduce repetitive effort and give students more room to focus on critical thinking.
Ronnie Screwvala, Co-founder and Chairperson of upGrad, said the initiative is about making AI capability a natural part of India’s workforce. He noted that providing learners with direct exposure to advanced tools can help the country strengthen its position in innovation and product development.
Founded in 2015, upGrad delivers online and hybrid programmes for individuals and enterprises, working with universities in India and abroad to offer diplomas, master’s degrees and executive doctorates. With this partnership, the company is reinforcing its effort to expand access to meaningful AI skills and support India’s broader vision of inclusive digital growth.
