Udemy is expanding its AI-powered training tools with a major update to its Role Play feature, introducing realistic video avatars and deeper customisation options for enterprise customers.
The company says the latest additions are designed to make workplace learning feel more practical and closer to real professional situations. Businesses can now create personalised training simulations based on different industries, job roles, and experience levels.
Announced on May 8, the upgraded feature allows learners to practise workplace conversations through interactive AI avatars that simulate real human interactions. These scenarios range from sales discussions and negotiation practice to leadership communication, conflict management, and feedback sessions.
Hugo Sarrazin, CEO of Udemy, said the goal is to help professionals gain confidence through active practice rather than relying only on traditional learning methods. He noted that many workplace skills improve faster when learners can train in realistic environments that mirror actual job situations.
The update is expected to be particularly valuable for sales and customer-facing teams. Organisations can now build training scenarios using their own products, target audiences, and business challenges, allowing employees to rehearse discovery calls, objection handling, and negotiation strategies before speaking with real customers.
Udemy said its platform already includes more than 15,000 Role Play exercises created by instructors, while users have completed over 400,000 interactive simulations since the feature launched. The company also uses insights from its global learner base to personalise training experiences across multiple languages.
According to Sarrazin, the addition of immersive video and advanced customisation is intended to make training more relevant to day-to-day work. He added that the feature can help learners strengthen communication abilities, leadership presence, and decision-making skills in high-pressure situations.
The move is part of Udemy’s larger strategy to strengthen its position as an AI-focused workplace learning platform. The San Francisco-based company works with enterprise customers including Samsung SDS America, Tata Consultancy Services, Volkswagen, and the World Bank Group.
