Tata Consultancy Services is changing how it assigns people to projects, and the shift is more practical than it sounds. The company says almost half of these internal moves are now suggested by AI instead of being handled entirely by managers.

Until recently, project allocations were mostly a manual task, with team leads and HR deciding who goes where. Now, TCS is relying on an internal system that works like a talent marketplace. It looks at what a project needs and matches it with employees who have the right skills. This is part of a wider effort to bring AI into everyday workflows, not just client-facing work.

For employees, this could make a real difference. In IT companies, your project often decides how fast you grow, what skills you pick up, and even your chances of promotion. If the matching process becomes quicker and more accurate, it could reduce the time people spend waiting on the bench and help them land roles that suit them better.

TCS had over 5.8 lakh employees as of March 2026, so managing assignments at that scale is not easy. The company added around 2,000 people in the last quarter, while attrition stood at 13.7%. With numbers constantly changing, using AI helps keep things more organised and responsive.

From the company’s side, the benefit is straightforward. When the right people are placed on the right projects faster, work moves quicker and productivity improves. That, in turn, helps maintain steady margins in a highly competitive market.

Investors are also paying attention to these internal changes. While AI-driven revenue is important, how the technology improves day-to-day operations matters just as much. If TCS can manage its workforce more efficiently—especially employees waiting for assignments—it could quietly strengthen overall performance. Over time, this kind of system may play a bigger role in shaping how careers grow within the company.
