Perplexity has introduced two separate variants of GPT 5.1 for its users. The first, called ‘Instant’, prioritizes speed and ease of use, catering to quick interactions. The second, ‘Thinking’, is built for more in-depth reasoning, detailed explanations, and precise answers.
CEO Aravind Srinivas described this as more than a routine update. According to him, subscribers on both Pro and Max plans will enjoy more natural conversations, improved understanding of context, and fewer vague responses.
The upgrade is designed to create a warmer, more engaging dialogue experience. Users can expect conversations that feel more personal and dynamic, with sharper reasoning and clearer communication.
Pro subscribers now gain access to the Instant version, while Max users have the choice between Instant and Thinking. This positioning helps Perplexity compete more strongly in the AI chat and search market.
The two modes cater to distinct user needs. Instant is ideal for quick facts, brainstorming, or fast content creation, while Thinking suits professional work, complex research, and detailed tasks. This dual approach may redefine expectations for AI assistants.
Strategic Significance and Future Outlook
Implementing GPT 5.1 also strengthens the company’s market standing. By offering the latest model, Perplexity hopes to keep users more engaged and retain a competitive edge over platforms that have not yet adopted it.
Srinivas also hinted at future developments, mentioning an upcoming model codenamed “Kimi K2.” Though details are scarce, it signals the company’s intention to continue expanding its AI capabilities.
