OpenAI has announced that it is collaborating with a group of higher education institutions in India to help develop AI-ready talent.

The move reflects a broader effort to prepare students for a future where artificial intelligence plays a central role in the workplace.

Onboarded as part of this initiative are Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, All India Institute of Medical Sciences New Delhi, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, and Pearl Academy.

The broader plan is to provide campus-wide access to OpenAI’s products and embed AI fluency across teaching, research, and administrative workflows. Collectively, the initiative is expected to benefit more than one lakh students, faculty members, and staff this year.

At IIT Delhi, the partnership includes campus-wide access to ChatGPT Edu. OpenAI’s coding platform, Codex, will also be integrated into research and training materials, enabling students to use AI more practically in engineering and technical work.

The collaboration will also feature OpenAI-supported hackathons focused on national and regional engineering priorities. These events will lead to OpenAI–IIT Delhi Industry Days, connecting student-led innovation with India’s deep-tech, manufacturing, and R&D ecosystem.

In the healthcare domain, OpenAI is working with AIIMS New Delhi to explore applied uses of AI in medical education, faculty development, and clinical training. Plans include the potential creation of an AI in Medical Education Hub to pilot use cases in teaching support, simulation, clinical documentation, and evidence synthesis.

The company has emphasized that clear quality benchmarks and safety guardrails will guide the rollout in healthcare education. The goal is to ensure AI enhances clinical judgment while maintaining patient safety and academic integrity.

Other participating institutions are also expected to strengthen AI adoption across disciplines, helping students and faculty apply AI more effectively within their academic programs.

At IIM Ahmedabad and Manipal Academy of Higher Education, OpenAI certifications will be introduced to formalize structured AI capability pathways within business and multidisciplinary education.

Raghav Gupta, Head of Education at OpenAI India, noted that by 2030 nearly 40% of the core skills used in today’s jobs are projected to change because of AI. However, he pointed out that a gap still exists between what AI tools are capable of and how they are currently being used.

By embedding AI tools, structured training, and research into the foundation of universities, he said, institutions can better equip students with the skills needed to thrive in an AI-driven world.
