OpenAI has announced that its ChatGPT Go plan will be available free for one year to users in India who sign up during a limited promotional period starting November 4. The company didn’t specify how long the offer will last, but said that existing ChatGPT Go subscribers in India will also receive the free 12-month plan.

Launched in India in August, ChatGPT Go is OpenAI’s most affordable paid subscription, priced at under $5 per month. The plan later rolled out to Indonesia and, more recently, to 16 other countries across Asia, reflecting OpenAI’s growing global push.

India has become a key market for OpenAI, with more than 700 million smartphone users and over a billion internet connections. The company opened a New Delhi office in August and is building a local team to strengthen its regional presence.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously described India as the company’s second-largest market after the United States. Despite strong user growth, however, converting that popularity into revenue has been a challenge. The ChatGPT app recorded over 29 million downloads in the 90 days leading up to August but generated only $3.6 million in in-app purchases during that time.

The ChatGPT Go plan gives users 10 times more usage compared to the free version. It supports image generation, file uploads, and provides enhanced memory for more personalized interactions, offering a more capable experience overall.

“Since launching ChatGPT Go in India a few months ago, the creativity and enthusiasm from users have been incredible,” said Nick Turley, OpenAI’s Vice President and Head of ChatGPT. “We’re excited to see what people in India will build, learn, and create with these tools.”

OpenAI’s competitors are also targeting India’s young and expanding digital audience. Perplexity recently partnered with Airtel to give its 360 million users free access to Perplexity Pro, while Google introduced a free one-year AI Pro plan for Indian students. OpenAI will further engage local developers during its DevDay Exchange conference in Bengaluru on November 4, where it plans to unveil India-specific initiatives for developers and businesses.
