AWS and OpenAI Announce $38 Billion Strategic Partnership

Amazon Web Services (AWS) and OpenAI have entered into a multi-year strategic partnership valued at $38 billion to run and scale OpenAI’s core intelligent computing workloads on AWS infrastructure. The agreement, spanning seven years, grants OpenAI access to AWS compute resources comprising hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA GPUs, with the potential to expand to tens of millions of CPUs.

Under the deal, OpenAI will start using AWS compute capacity immediately, with full deployment expected by the end of 2026 and additional scaling planned through 2027 and beyond. The collaboration comes amid a global surge in demand for high-performance computing power to support next-generation technologies.

“Scaling frontier technologies requires massive, reliable compute,” said Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI. “Our partnership with AWS strengthens the global compute ecosystem that will power this next era and bring advanced intelligence to everyone.”

Matt Garman, CEO of AWS, said the company’s infrastructure would serve as a critical backbone for OpenAI’s growing operations. “As OpenAI continues to push technological boundaries, AWS’s industry-leading infrastructure will support their vision,” Garman noted. “The breadth and readiness of optimised compute prove why AWS is uniquely positioned to meet OpenAI’s large-scale computational needs.”

The new infrastructure, featuring NVIDIA GB200 and GB300 GPUs connected through Amazon EC2 UltraServers, is built to deliver low-latency performance across vast clusters. These systems will support both inference for ChatGPT and training for next-generation models, while offering flexibility to adapt to OpenAI’s evolving requirements.

Expanding Access to Intelligent Technologies

The partnership extends the companies’ ongoing efforts to deliver intelligent solutions to enterprise customers. OpenAI’s open-weight foundation models were recently made available on Amazon Bedrock, enabling AWS clients to integrate them directly into their applications.

Companies such as Bystreet, Comscore, Peloton, Thomson Reuters, Triomics, and Verana Health are already leveraging OpenAI’s models on AWS for automated workflows, programming assistance, scientific research, and advanced data analysis.

The deal reinforces both companies’ shared vision of advancing large-scale intelligent technologies for enterprise and consumer applications. It also highlights the growing interdependence between cloud infrastructure providers and emerging technology developers.

This agreement builds on OpenAI’s broader strategy to secure massive computing capacity, following partnerships with NVIDIA, AMD, and Broadcom — collectively representing more than 26 gigawatts of power and potential commitments exceeding $1 trillion.
