OpenAI Hires Former xAI Finance Chief Mike Liberatore for Key Role :OpenAI has appointed Mike Liberatore, the former finance head at Elon Musk’s xAI, as its new business finance officer. In this role, Liberatore will be responsible for overseeing the company’s AI infrastructure, according to a spokesperson who shared the news with Reuters on Tuesday.
Liberatore, who left xAI in July after only three months, will report directly to OpenAI’s CFO, Sarah Friar. He will also collaborate with Greg Brockman’s team, which focuses on scaling OpenAI’s computing capacity, the spokesperson confirmed. His new position officially begins on Tuesday, as first reported by CNBC.
Before his time at xAI, Liberatore was a finance executive at Airbnb. He played a key role in xAI’s $5 billion debt raise in June and a separate $5 billion strategic investment.
Liberatore’s hiring comes during a period of growing competition between Musk’s ventures and OpenAI, along with an ongoing battle among tech giants to secure top AI talent. Notably, Musk, who co-founded OpenAI, had sued the company and its CEO, Sam Altman, in 2022, accusing them of straying from the organization’s original mission to benefit humanity. In return, OpenAI countersued Musk for harassment earlier this year.
