Intuit Expands Financial Tools Through OpenAI Partnership
Intuit has signed a multi-year deal worth over $100 million with OpenAI, enabling its tax and financial applications to operate directly within ChatGPT and expanding the company’s use of OpenAI’s models across its products.
The partnership allows users to access tools like TurboTax, Credit Karma, QuickBooks, and Mailchimp through ChatGPT, making it possible to ask questions and complete tasks such as estimating tax refunds, reviewing credit options, or managing business finances.
With permission, Intuit’s apps can access customers’ financial data to generate responses and carry out tasks, including sending marketing messages or issuing invoice reminders.
Customers will also be able to use these tools within ChatGPT to evaluate credit cards, personal loans, and mortgages, streamlining financial decision-making.
This agreement reflects a growing trend of technology and financial companies integrating advanced language models into consumer and business software to improve accessibility and functionality.
OpenAI launched a program in October to let developers create apps accessible through ChatGPT. Early participants included Booking.com, Expedia, Spotify, and several other consumer and productivity platforms.
Ensuring Accuracy and Expanding Internal Use
Intuit’s integration is distinct because it will be used for tasks that directly influence financial decisions, raising concerns about the reliability of outputs, which can occasionally be incorrect or misleading.
To address this, Intuit employs multiple validation methods and relies on extensive domain-specific datasets to minimize the risk of errors or inaccurate responses, according to spokesperson Bruce Chan.
“When our system provides guidance, it draws on the deep expertise Intuit has developed over many years and leverages data that gives us a full view of the customer,” Chan said. “This ensures the answers are relevant, grounded in customer data, and reflect our domain knowledge.”
Chan also noted that Intuit continues to stand behind the accuracy guarantees of its products, including TurboTax, but did not clarify whether the company or the customer would be responsible for errors arising from generated recommendations.
Intuit has been expanding its use of advanced models in recent years, leveraging its extensive data infrastructure. In 2023, it introduced Intuit Assist, a virtual assistant working across its products.
The partnership also enhances Intuit’s use of OpenAI’s models across its business. It provides access to new audiences via ChatGPT, creating another channel for distributing small-business and consumer finance tools, while also supporting internal workflows through ChatGPT Enterprise.
