In a significant leadership move, Google DeepMind has appointed Jasjeet Sekhon as its new Chief Strategy Officer (CSO), signaling how seriously top AI labs are strengthening their leadership teams as competition heats up.
The development comes at a time when major players like Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic are sharpening their own long-term strategies in the race toward advanced AI systems.
A Broader Role at a Critical Time
Sekhon will take on a wide-ranging role at DeepMind, overseeing research direction, commercial strategy, and policy-related efforts. The appointment was announced by CEO Demis Hassabis in a LinkedIn post on March 18.
Reflecting on the company’s mission, Hassabis noted that DeepMind was founded in 2010 with a belief that Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) could become one of the most transformative technologies ever created—capable of accelerating breakthroughs in science, medicine, and productivity.
He also expressed enthusiasm about working closely with Sekhon, especially at a moment when the pace of AI development is rapidly increasing.
From Academia to AI Strategy
Sekhon brings a diverse background spanning academia and industry. Since 2018, he has been involved in building AI capabilities at Bridgewater Associates, where he contributed to the launch of its AIA Labs alongside co-CIO Greg Jensen.
Before entering the private sector, Sekhon held academic positions at institutions including Yale University, University of California, Berkeley, and Harvard University, building a strong foundation in data science and research.
While he will step down from his operational role at Bridgewater, Sekhon is expected to remain connected to the firm through its board of directors.
What It Means for DeepMind’s Future
The appointment highlights how leadership is becoming a defining factor in the AI race—not just raw technology. As companies push toward AGI, the ability to balance innovation with safety, policy, and real-world impact is increasingly critical.
Hassabis acknowledged both the promise and complexity of this moment, emphasizing the need for careful, forward-thinking leadership to guide AI development responsibly.
Sekhon, in his response, said he is excited to take on the new role and believes DeepMind is uniquely positioned to develop AGI in a way that benefits humanity. He described AGI as a once-in-a-generation technology with the potential to reshape science, medicine, and productivity at a global scale.
