At an event in New Delhi on Tuesday, Google announced a significant investment of $15 billion over the next five years to build a major tech infrastructure hub in Andhra Pradesh. The move highlights Google’s expanding focus on strengthening its digital operations in India.
The upcoming 1-gigawatt facility will be located in Visakhapatnam, a prominent port city. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian described the project as the largest technology hub the company is developing outside the United States.
Previously, government officials had projected the investment to be around $10 billion, but Google’s official announcement reveals a much larger commitment than earlier expected.
This development comes as global tech companies are stepping up their efforts to build massive computing infrastructure. Google alone is expected to invest around $85 billion this year to expand its network of data centres to meet the growing demand for digital services that rely heavily on advanced computation.
Other global giants are already active in this space. Microsoft and Amazon have made significant investments in India’s cloud infrastructure. Amazon, for instance, is planning to spend $12.7 billion by 2030 to enhance its presence in South Asia. Meanwhile, OpenAI is also working on a 1-gigawatt data facility in the region.
Google’s planned hub in Visakhapatnam will be the largest in Asia, both in terms of investment and capacity. It forms part of a larger effort by the company to expand its network across the region, with other projects ongoing in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.
The Visakhapatnam project is being developed in collaboration with AdaniConneX and Airtel. It will rely on advanced digital infrastructure similar to what powers services like Search, Workspace, and YouTube.
The hub aims to deliver fast, high-capacity services to businesses and organizations. It is expected to support innovation, accelerate research, and enable the development of new data-driven solutions across various sectors, from healthcare to finance.
Adani Group’s founder, Gautam Adani, shared that the facility will host powerful processing systems required for complex computing tasks like deep learning, neural networks, and large-scale model analysis. He emphasized its potential to drive advancements in vital sectors such as agriculture, logistics, and healthcare.
Once operational, the Visakhapatnam campus will become part of Google’s global network of data hubs, which spans 12 countries. It will also incorporate developments from the company’s research centres in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune, including progress in both software and hardware.
As part of the project, Google will build a new international subsea gateway on India’s eastern coast. This includes the installation of multiple undersea cables, which will link into Google’s existing global infrastructure, stretching over two million miles. This effort will help transform Visakhapatnam into a key node for digital connectivity.
The subsea project will be jointly developed with Airtel, which will co-build the data centre and a cutting-edge Cable Landing Station (CLS). Airtel will also deploy high-speed fibre networks across cities and states, enhancing digital connectivity and supporting broader access to next-generation computing services across India.
