Global Rollout and How ChatGPT Group Chats Work
ChatGPT is expanding its new group chat feature to users worldwide across the Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans, OpenAI announced on Thursday. The update follows a small pilot that rolled out in regions like Japan and New Zealand last week.
The tool enables multiple users to collaborate with each other and ChatGPT in a shared conversation space. OpenAI notes that this shift transforms ChatGPT from a single-user assistant into a place where friends, families, or teams can work jointly on tasks.
OpenAI envisions group chats as a way for people to coordinate travel plans, co-draft documents, resolve disagreements, or explore ideas together, with ChatGPT helping by looking up information, summarizing content, and comparing choices.
Each group chat can include up to 20 participants, as long as they accept an invitation. OpenAI also clarifies that personal settings and memory remain individual and are not shared with others.
To begin a group conversation, users tap the people icon and add participants, either manually or by sending out a shareable link. Everyone will need to create a brief profile containing a name, username, and photo.
If someone is added to an existing discussion, a new group chat is generated, ensuring the original conversation remains unaffected.
ChatGPT’s Evolving Role and Related Product Developments
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT can understand when to join in and when to stay silent during group interactions. Anyone can tag “ChatGPT” to prompt a response. The assistant can also use emoji reactions and identify users based on their profile images.
This update represents another step in OpenAI’s push to evolve ChatGPT from a basic assistant into a more social, collaborative environment.
The company says that, over time, it expects ChatGPT to take on a more active role in real-time group discussions, helping people plan, create, and execute tasks together.
The announcement comes shortly after the debut of GPT 5.1, which introduced both Instant and Thinking versions of the model.
Earlier in the year, OpenAI also launched Sora, a social-focused app that lets users create and share videos of themselves and their friends through a feed reminiscent of TikTok.
