Canva has announced a new feature called Magic Layers, a technology that allows users to turn static images or AI-generated visuals into fully editable designs inside the Canva editor.

The company said the feature is designed to solve a common issue with many generative AI tools. Often, AI-generated designs are delivered as flat images, making it difficult for users to modify individual elements without recreating the entire design.

With Magic Layers, Canva aims to change that experience. The tool analyses an uploaded image and automatically separates it into structured, editable layers. This means users can adjust different parts of a design instead of working with a single fixed image.

According to Canva co-founder and Chief Product Officer Cameron Adams, the goal is to make AI-generated content more flexible for creators. He noted that while AI can quickly produce designs, those outputs have often been difficult to edit or customise.

The new feature works by identifying the structure of an image and rebuilding it inside the Canva editor. Text found within the image is converted back into editable text boxes, while other visual components become separate objects that can be moved, resized, or adjusted. The original layout of the design is largely preserved during the process.

In the current beta version, users can upload single-page PNG and JPG files. Once the image is processed, creators can move elements, change backgrounds, update fonts, or modify other parts of the design without starting from scratch.

Magic Layers can also work alongside Canva’s AI tools. Users can generate a design with Canva AI and then refine it directly in the editor, making it easier to build presentations, documents, and social media posts that remain editable throughout the process.

The feature is powered by the Canva Design Model, the company’s in-house foundation model for design generation. Since launching in October, this model has produced hundreds of millions of editable presentations, documents, and social media designs. It also supports Canva’s integrations with AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Microsoft Copilot.

Magic Layers is currently rolling out in public beta starting in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. Canva said the feature is expected to become available globally at a later stage.

Founded in 2013, Canva has grown into a widely used platform for visual communication and design collaboration, serving businesses, creators, students, and organisations in more than 190 countries.
