Apple is exploring a new wearable product that could expand its push into artificial intelligence hardware, according to people familiar with the matter. The idea centres on a small pin designed to be worn on clothing rather than as a wrist-based device.
The product is described as a flat, circular unit made from aluminium and glass. Engineers are aiming to keep it compact, close to the size of existing tracking accessories, though thicker to accommodate internal components. The device is expected to include two cameras, one standard and one wide-angle, enabling photo and video capture.
AI Pin Design and Features Take Shape
The pin would also carry three microphones for voice input, along with a built-in speaker. A physical button is part of the design, while charging would take place through a strip on the back, similar to fitness wearables.
Development is said to be moving faster as competition around AI hardware grows. While no launch has been confirmed, internal timelines being discussed point to a possible release around 2027. Production volumes under consideration reportedly run into the tens of millions of units.
The category, however, remains unproven. Previous AI pin-style devices struggled to attract users and were eventually discontinued. One such product, developed by a startup founded by former Apple employees, shut down after failing to gain traction.
Apple’s involvement could still reshape the space. The company has a history of refining experimental hardware ideas and pushing them into the mainstream through close integration with its software and services.
