Businesses and startups using Anthropic’s Claude through major cloud and productivity platforms will still be able to access the AI model, even as the company faces a dispute with the U.S. Department of Defense.

Large technology providers have clarified that the restrictions linked to the government’s decision are limited in scope and do not affect most commercial users.

The issue surfaced after the U.S. Defense Department labeled the American AI company a supply-chain risk. The move followed Anthropic’s refusal to grant unrestricted access to its technology for certain military uses. According to the company, some of the requested applications — including large-scale surveillance systems and fully autonomous weapons — were not uses its AI could safely support.

This designation means the Pentagon will eventually stop using Anthropic’s products once Claude is removed from its systems. It also requires organizations working directly on Defense Department contracts to confirm that Anthropic’s models are not being used within those specific agreements.

Even so, major technology platforms that distribute the model say the impact is limited. Microsoft explained that Anthropic’s models will remain available to customers across its products for non-defense work. That includes services such as Microsoft 365, GitHub, and Microsoft’s AI development platforms.

Google has taken a similar position. The company said the determination does not prevent it from collaborating with Anthropic on projects unrelated to defense activities, and Claude will continue to be offered through Google Cloud.

Cloud customers using Amazon Web Services can also keep using Claude for workloads that are not connected to defense contracts, according to reports.

Anthropic’s chief executive has also stressed that the restriction applies only when Claude would be used directly as part of Defense Department contracts. Companies that work with the Pentagon can still use the model for other business purposes that have nothing to do with those agreements.

While the company prepares to challenge the designation in court, demand for Claude appears to be rising, with more businesses and users continuing to adopt the AI model.
