Amazon is going bigger on AI, putting in another $5 billion into Anthropic—and that number could eventually climb to $20 billion. The move tightens the relationship between the two at a time when the race in artificial intelligence is only getting more intense.

The partnership isn’t just about investment. Anthropic is planning to spend more than $100 billion over the next decade on Amazon Web Services (AWS), leaning heavily on its cloud platform and custom-built AI chips. Even so, Amazon has made it clear it’s staying a minority investor, without any board seat. Any additional funding will depend on how the partnership progresses.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said demand for the company’s in-house AI chips has been picking up quickly, largely because they deliver strong performance at a lower cost. He pointed out that Anthropic choosing AWS Trainium chips for the long term shows how much the collaboration has evolved.

For Anthropic, the story is all about scale. CEO Dario Amodei said demand for its Claude AI models has been rising fast, making it essential to expand infrastructure. He noted that the deeper tie-up with Amazon will help the company keep up with that demand while continuing to push its AI research forward. Already, over 100,000 customers are using Claude through AWS.

There’s also a practical shift coming for users. Soon, AWS customers will be able to access the Claude platform directly within AWS itself—no extra logins, contracts, or billing setups needed. It’s a small change on the surface, but one that could make adoption much smoother for businesses.

Claude’s reach is also worth noting. It remains one of the few advanced AI models available across all three major cloud platforms—AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure.

Underneath all this is a massive push on infrastructure. Anthropic has secured access to up to 5 gigawatts of computing power to train and run its AI systems. That includes newer versions of Amazon’s Trainium chips, along with millions of Graviton processors, forming the backbone of its future plans.

The two companies have actually been working together since 2023, building out large-scale systems like Project Rainier—now used to train and operate Claude globally. At the moment, Anthropic is already running its models on more than a million Trainium2 chips.

This deal comes as Anthropic sees rapid growth. Its revenue run rate has crossed $30 billion in 2026, a sharp jump from around $9 billion just a year earlier. Demand is coming from all sides—businesses, developers, and regular users across its different plans.

But that kind of growth brings pressure too. Some users have already noticed slowdowns during peak times. With this expanded investment and infrastructure, the goal now is simple: keep things running smoothly as demand continues to rise.
