European AI company Mistral AI has acquired Austrian startup Emmi AI in a move that signals the growing importance of AI in industrial engineering and manufacturing.

While most AI companies are focused on chatbots and consumer tools, this deal is centred on something very different — using AI to solve complex physics and engineering problems for industries like aerospace, automotive, energy, and semiconductors.

Emmi AI, founded in Linz, Austria, develops AI systems that can speed up industrial simulations and modelling processes. These simulations are widely used by manufacturers to test products, improve designs, and reduce development time before physical production begins.

The startup has built a team of more than 30 researchers and engineers working on physics-based AI models. Their work includes technologies related to real-time power grid balancing, injection moulding simulations, and vehicle safety testing.

As part of the acquisition, Emmi AI’s founders and employees are expected to join Mistral AI’s Science and Applied AI teams in May 2026. Mistral plans to combine Emmi’s expertise with its own AI models to create more advanced industrial AI systems and digital twin technologies.

The deal also expands Mistral AI’s presence in Europe. Linz will officially become one of the company’s offices, joining cities including Paris, London, Amsterdam, Munich, San Francisco, and Singapore. The company has also hinted at further hiring across Austria, Germany, and Lithuania.

Speaking about the acquisition, Mistral AI CEO Arthur Mensch said the partnership would help manufacturers solve difficult engineering challenges faster and improve innovation in high-stakes industries.

Guillaume Lample said the company wants to build AI systems capable of running real-time simulations and supporting next-generation engineering workflows that traditional methods often struggle to handle efficiently.

Meanwhile, Emmi AI co-founder Johannes Brandstetter said the collaboration could help industries develop future aircraft, vehicles, and semiconductor technologies with faster and more accurate simulations.

The acquisition comes at a time when European AI firms are increasingly trying to strengthen local technological capabilities and build more independent AI infrastructure for critical industries.
