Meta has acquired humanoid robotics startup Assured Robot Intelligence (ARI), though it hasn’t shared how much the deal is worth. The move shows the company is getting more serious about building AI that can work in the real world through robots.

According to Meta, ARI has been working on advanced robotic intelligence that helps machines understand and respond to human behavior in complex, changing environments. The startup’s entire team, including its founders, will now join Meta’s AI division under its Superintelligence Labs research group.

Before the acquisition, ARI had raised early funding from AIX Ventures and was focused on developing core AI models for humanoid robots. These robots were being designed to handle physical tasks like household chores. Co-founder Xiaolong Wang has a strong research background, having worked at Nvidia and taught at UC San Diego. Meanwhile, Lerrel Pinto has academic experience at NYU and had also co-founded a small humanoid robotics startup that Amazon acquired recently.

Meta believes bringing ARI onboard will strengthen its efforts in humanoid robotics. The company said the team brings valuable expertise in building AI systems that can control full-body robot movements and learn on their own through interaction.

This isn’t a sudden shift for Meta. The company has been exploring humanoid robotics for years, with earlier internal discussions hinting at plans to build both the hardware and AI needed for such systems.

Even if a consumer robot doesn’t arrive anytime soon, many in the AI space believe that reaching artificial general intelligence (AGI) will require machines to learn from the physical world — something robots are uniquely suited for.

Overall, the ARI acquisition reflects a bigger trend in the tech industry, where companies are racing to develop smarter robots. At the same time, the market’s future remains uncertain, with estimates ranging from billions in the near term to trillions over the coming decades.
