Anthropic is quietly reshaping how its Claude subscriptions work, and the change is likely to impact users who depend on external tools.

From April 4, the company will no longer include third-party tools within its subscription coverage. While those tools won’t disappear, using them will now come with an extra cost.

According to an email sent to users, tools like OpenClaw will move out of the standard plan and into a separate, pay-as-you-go system. This means any usage through such platforms will be billed independently, even if you already have a Claude subscription.

The update was also shared publicly by Boris Cherny, who leads Claude Code, confirming that subscriptions will no longer extend to third-party integrations. However, users can still continue using these tools by enabling additional usage or by connecting through a Claude API key.

Anthropic said the change will first apply to OpenClaw, with similar rules expected to roll out for other external tools over time. Users who want uninterrupted access will need to turn on extra usage in their accounts.

The company pointed to infrastructure pressure as the main reason behind the shift. It noted that third-party tools tend to generate heavier and more unpredictable workloads, which don’t align well with how its subscription plans were originally designed.

At the same time, Anthropic is focusing more on users who directly use its core products and API, where it has better control over performance and capacity.

To make the transition easier, subscribers will receive a one-time credit equal to their monthly plan cost. The company is also introducing discounted bundles for those who expect to keep using third-party tools.

For users who are not comfortable with the change, Anthropic has said that refund options will be made available, with further details to be shared via email.

Overall, the move signals a shift in how the company balances growth and system demand—giving users flexibility, but with clearer boundaries on what subscriptions actually cover.
