Switching to a new AI assistant has never really been about curiosity—it’s about effort. Most people don’t want to lose months of conversations, preferences, and the small details a chatbot has picked up over time. Starting fresh just feels like too much work.

Google seems to understand that.

It has quietly introduced a new feature in Gemini that lets users bring their chat history and personal context from other AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude. And unlike many feature rollouts, this one isn’t locked behind a subscription—it’s available to everyone.

The goal here feels pretty straightforward: make switching easier, without making users feel like they’re losing something.

There are two simple ways to do it. One option is almost clever in its simplicity. Gemini gives you a prompt that you can paste into another chatbot, asking it to describe what it knows about you—your writing style, preferences, even small personal details. You take that summary and drop it into Gemini, and just like that, it has a rough understanding of who you are.

The second method is more hands-on. You can export your chat data from platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, or Grok and upload it directly into Gemini. Google allows fairly large uploads—up to 5GB per file—and a few files each day. Once added, your old conversations don’t just sit there; you can actually refer back to them inside Gemini.

What this really does is remove a quiet but powerful barrier. People don’t always stick with one AI because it’s the best—they stick with it because it’s familiar. It already “gets” them. By letting users carry that familiarity with them, Google is making it much easier to consider switching.

The feature has arrived alongside the rollout of Gemini 3.1 Flash Live, which suggests this isn’t just a small update. It looks more like part of a bigger push to bring more users into the Gemini ecosystem.

And by keeping it free, Google isn’t treating this as a premium add-on. It’s using it as an entry point—an easy way to get people in the door without asking them to give up what they’ve already built elsewhere.
