OpenAI has revealed plans to acquire Astral, the firm behind a suite of popular open-source Python tools, in a move designed to strengthen its Codex ecosystem.
Astral is widely recognized for creating developer-focused tools like uv for managing dependencies and environments, Ruff for fast linting and formatting, and ty for type checking. Together, these tools play a crucial role in modern Python workflows, helping developers organize projects, maintain clean code, and identify errors early in the development process.
With this acquisition, OpenAI plans to continue supporting Astral’s open-source offerings while gradually integrating them into Codex. The broader goal is to expand Codex beyond simple code generation and enable it to function across the full software development lifecycle.
The announcement comes as Codex experiences rapid momentum, with user numbers tripling and overall usage increasing fivefold since the beginning of the year, now reaching more than two million weekly active users.
OpenAI said it aims to evolve Codex into a system that can actively participate in development workflows—assisting with planning changes, editing codebases, running tools, verifying outputs, and maintaining software over time.
By incorporating Astral’s tooling, the company intends to give AI systems the ability to directly interact with real-world development environments. This would allow AI agents to handle tasks like dependency management, code quality enforcement, and output validation—areas that current AI coding assistants typically do not cover.
Astral’s founder and CEO, Charlie Marsh, said the company has always focused on building tools that help developers deliver better software more efficiently, adding that its open-source projects will continue to grow within the Codex ecosystem.
The deal is still pending regulatory approval and standard closing conditions. Until it is finalized, both companies will continue operating independently. Once completed, Astral’s team is expected to join OpenAI’s Codex division, paving the way for tighter integration between AI systems and developer tools.
