Sora AI Video Generator App Expands to Android

Sora, the AI video generator app developed by OpenAI, is now available on Android. Initially exclusive to iOS, the social app features a TikTok-style feed of AI-generated videos and allows users to create videos from text prompts.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Bill Peebles, OpenAI’s Sora head, mentioned that the Android app is currently limited to select regions including the United States, Canada, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. OpenAI is working on launching Sora in Europe, but it is still unclear when it will become available in India.

Unlike the iOS version, which required an invite code to access, Sora’s Android app does not require an invite or waitlist, making it easier for users to join.

Key Features of Sora

The app lets users generate videos from text prompts and share them on a feed similar to Instagram or TikTok. Users can also use the “Cameos” feature, which allows them to upload a picture of themselves and replace the background with anything generated by Sora. This requires a one-time video and voice clip for identity verification and appearance capture.

Sora also provides personalized suggestions based on user activity, location, previous interactions, and ChatGPT history. However, there are daily limits on video creation: ChatGPT Pro users can make up to 100 videos every 24 hours, while free and Plus users are restricted to 30 videos per day.

The app quickly gained popularity, achieving 1 million downloads within just five days of launch and topping the Apple App Store for about three weeks. Currently, Sora holds the number five spot in the US, ranking just behind Gemini and ChatGPT.
